How did you get started?
Gosh, I can't really recall how it all started. As long as I can remember, I was always always making tiny clothes for my Barbies since I was a little girl. My mother was a dress maker so I always wore bespoke clothes growing up (very special I know). It was definitely my mother and her work that inspired me to become a fashion designer. That aspiration grew into passion and I knew very early on that it is the path I would take. In 2003, I left home for the UK to study Fashion Design.
How would you envision a woman in DUONG* designs?
I want to design clothes that can make the woman who wear them feel that she is the Cinderella at the royal ball, not afraid to standout from the crowd, not afraid to shine. My designs aim to give her the confidence, the fearlessness but also elegance and sexiness at the same time.
Why a career in fashion?
Despite having been in the industry for approximately a decade, every time I get a new ideas, or get excited by a new design, I still feel goosebumps on my skin. That is Passion to me. Fashion is the way for me to express my feelings and turn into something beautiful and wearable.
So, tell us about your debut capsule pieces for Perfect Your Own Way!
The first capsule pieces (available at Perfect Your Own Way) are very feminine yet striking. I created special prints inspired by rusty architecture combined with hand drawn floral patterns. I hope these designs will be loved by the modern women who are not afraid to challenge the norm with daring prints and unique cuts.
What is your current Challenge?
I am still at the early stage of building my brand so it certainly is not easy. As a single mother, raising my two beautiful children well is equally important yet challenging. It is difficult juggling between being mother and a being designer, but I am fortunate to be able to do what I love and I will do whatever it takes to follow my passion.
My two children (at 7 and 5 years of age) are the constant source of energy and motivation for me to push myself further. It has always been our favourite moments when the three of us hang around in my design studio as a team, and they have already started to help me with making patterns and sewing. I hope they would grow up being proud of their mother who consistently strives hard to pursue her dream.
